Robert Tewsley

Robert Tewsley was born in Leicester, England, and studied at the Royal Ballet School. From 1990 to 1996, he danced with the National Ballet of Canada, where he became principal dancer in 1994. In 1996, he joined the Stuttgart Ballet as a principal dancer, and in the fall of 2002 he joined The Royal Ballet as a principal. In November 2002, he joined New York City Ballet as a principal dancer.

Since October 2004, Mr. Tewsley is a freelance dancer, making frequent guest appearances around the world, including with New York City Ballet, The Stuttgart Ballet, The Royal Ballet, Vienna State Opera Ballet, La Scala Milan, New National Theatre Tokyo, Ballet Santiago de Chile, The Royal Winnipeg Ballet amongst others. Most recently he originated a role in Dido and Aeneas created by Wayne MacGregor for La Scala Milan, and in Penelope a pas de deux with Marcia Haydee, created by Christian Spuck for a television production with ARTE.

Mr. Tewsley’s repertory at The National Ballet of Canada included Sir Fredeick Ashton’s The Dream (Oberon), A Month in the Country (Beliaev), Scènes de Ballet, and Symphonic Variations; Erik Bruhn’s Swan Lake ( Siegfried), La Sylphide, John Cranko’s Romeo and Juliet, Onegin, and The Taming of the Shrew. Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s Manon, and Song of the Earth, Rudolf Nureyev’s The Sleeping Beauty, Sir Peter Wright’s Giselle.

Mr. Tewsley also originated roles in James Kudelka’s The Actress, The Nutcracker, Vittoria Pas de Deux and Spring Awakening, John Neumeier’s Now and Then, Glen Tetley’s Oracle, and Jean Grand Maitre’s Frames of Mind. Mr Tewsley’s repertoire at The Stuttgart Ballet included John Cranko’s Onegin, Swan Lake, Intials RBME, Poème de l’extase, Brouillards and Romeo and Juliet, George Balanchine’s Apollo, The four Temperaments, Stravinsky Violin Concerto, Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux, and Theme and Variations, William Forsythe’s Hermann Schmermann, In the Middle Somewhat Elevated and The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude, John Neumeier’s Hello Pas De Deux, and The Lady of the Camelias, Glen Tetley’s Pierrot Lunaire, Voluntaries, The Rite of Spring. He originated roles in Mauro Bigonzetti’s Kazimir’s Colours, Douglas Lee’s Curtain of Hands and Siren Sounding, Kevin O’Day’s Dreamdeepdown, Christian Spuck’s Carlotta’s Portrait, Dos Amores, Le Grand Pas de Deux and Das Siebte Blau. Whilst in the Stuttgart Ballet Mr Tewsley was voted Dancer of the Year 2002, by the European dance magazine Dance Europe, he was also nominated twice for the Prix Benois de la Dance for his interpretations of Albrecht in Giselle, and Apollo.
Mr, Tewsley’s repertory with The Royal Ballet included Onegin, Swan Lake, Giselle and Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s Mayerling.
Mr Tewsley’s repertoire in New York City Ballet included Balanchine’s Ballade, Divertimento no. 15, The Four Temperaments, Esmeralds, La Valse, Valse Fantaisie, Vienna Waltzes and Western Symphony; Jerome Robbins’ Afternoon of a Faun, The Four Seasons, Glass Pieces and In the Night. He also originated the Balanchine figure in Boris Eifman’s Musagète.
